When the election began, Calvin Coolidge declined to run for the reelection in 1928. However the republicans nominated his secretary, Herbert Hoover. Hoover was known to the americans because he had run the Food Administration during WW1. Not long after, came along Alfred E Smith, Choosen by the democrats. Alfred was a 4 time governor Of New York. Although Smith was brought up in a roman catholic family his beliefs on the campaign began to be an issue. Protesters claimed that the Catholic Church financed the democratic party and would rule the United States if Smith became president. His biggest challenge was the prosperity of the 1920's therefore the Republicans took basically full credit. Hoover beat Smith by a shot of more then 6 million votes and wont the Electoral College, 444 to 87.
Overall Hoover took over.
